BOCS to select Vice Chair

Dear BOCS Members:

In this time of recession and socioeconomic turmoil, I request that you consider carefully your selection of a Vice Chair. The Vice Chair must represent the voice of everyone, not special interest groups which do not have the general welfare of the county in mind.

Please consider that the pursuit of private agendas and execution of personal bias in government lead to systemic disintegration. When the BOCS fails to make wise decisions, citizens suffer, and we fail as a county. We don't need more foreclosures and negative press.

I am not sure how you select a Vice Chair, but I hope you do so in a democratic fashion. I look forward to learning more about your process.

Sincerely,
Katherine Mercurio Gotthardt

The Eyes Have It

Ladies and Gentlemen, as promised....Alexandra the Great's fabulous Christmas ornament, made when she was a four-year-old.

Behold.......

Memories...light the corners of my mind

My 2008 scrapbook is done! I always feel good when I complete the year's memories before the end of January. Of course my Christmas decor is still up, but I can start taking that down slowly. I have until the end of January. At least that's my belief. I'm not one to leave my decor up even until that time, but I don't want to stress myself out. Besides, my living room looks like a cute little shop. If anyone wants to come over and pay for my fru-fru, I will gladly sell some of it...except those homemade wooden snowflakes my kids made when they were four and five.

Alexandra was particularly creative that day. She took dozens of googly eyes and glued them to the tips of the snowflakes. The result were godlike items that stare at us every Christmas. They are creepy, funny and cute all at the same time. You have to respect anything that gives you a consistent laugh every year. Do you feel like you are being watched?

Hubby got me this awesome scrapbooking software that makes my creative jobs easier but still, well, creative. Sometimes you get these things and you feel like you are either cheating or not wasteful because you are not using your inventory of sticker, papers, cut-outs and other fru-frus. This is not the case here. I use the templates, print them out and then augment them with the 3-d stuff. At the end of the book, I have cards and other real "scraps" pasted to each page. And of course, these pages are fru-frued as well. I had a grand time sticking stickers to each page, reveling in the scent of vinyl (the sticker albums) and paper. I know. I'm weird.

I'm almost done with Hubby's short bio album. It's not short because his life will be short of anything. It's short because I don't have that many baby pictures of him. As time goes on, I will add to it, of course. He's still young and there is plenty of time to embarrass him. He has already vowed to cut up his 80's pics. That Beatles haircut is a source of embarrassment. I told him not to worry. I had one too. Plus that, I had headgear. 1982. See the pic at the bottom with Great Grandma Costa and me? Now THAT'S pretty bad. Actually, most of these 70's and 80's pictures are pretty bad. David needn't worry.

What you also see here (upside down in some cases) are pictures of my mom, dog, dad, house I grew up in, the neighborhood kids and I in a "Happy Father's Day Parade" and my older brother whom I used to call "perma legs" when he began to sprout hair. Wasn't I a nice sister?

In any event, more pics coming, including the ones of the eyeball ornament. Be sure to "look for it." Heh heh.

All About Bristow VA

This is for Doug who stopped by my other blog and wanted to know more about Bristow. So here are some thoughts, Doug.

I've been in the PWC area for going on ten years. I used to live in Manassas. Then I lived in Vienna for about 8 months. I've lived in Bristow for six years now. We came here when my older daughter was entering Kindergarten and my younger daughter was still in pre-school.

Living in Bristow is interesting. We have Manassas, Gainesville, Nokesville, Haymarket and Brentsville as our immediate neighbors. So there is lots going on.

Here's what I love about the area:

1. GREAT schools! The teachers and administrators have been very responsive. I feel my children have been given a superb and I'm so thankful for the dedicated people who work in our schools. Let me not forget the office staff, lunch and facilities people and the nurse, all of whom I interact with enough to give this kind of praise.

Parents are very involved with the schools, which really helps. Proactive parents ensure their kids get the most out of school, and I'd say the school folks want that, too.

2. Lots of playgrounds for little ones. If you live in a newer subdivision, you probably will have a playground near you. You probably will also have a community pool. If you don't, there are local playgrounds and the George Mason Freedom Center, which has a terrific indoor pool and gym.

3. Low crime. I feel safe here.

4. Shopping centers in Bristow, Gainesville and Manassas close by. Salvation Army close by!! If you like to thrift shop, this will make you happy. But there are other more upscale stores here as well if you are into that kind of thing. Restaurants galore.

5. Charity organizations doing great things for the community.

6. A new police station which is I think only about 3 miles from where I am. Since Bristow isn't a big place, it's got to be pretty close to most of the area. We also have a fire station about two miles from us (maybe less). Again--pretty close by.

7. Active churches/spiritual places of all flavors.

8. Full-service libraries with lots of programs for children and adults.

9. Lots of history and local hiking at Manassas Battlefield Park.

Here is my main concern specific to Bristow and the surrounding area, the one that has bothered me since moving here:

Over-development.

There doesn't seem to have been very good planning in some ways so roads and school boundaries are irritating at times. The area is growing and it requires a tremendous amount of smarts to do it right.

You mention Bristoe Station, and that's one subdivision that is kind of plunked in the middle of an historical area. This drives the history and nature lovers nuts. Since I appreciate both history and nature, it kind of drives me nuts as well : )

We've talked about moving several times because I'm not really a subdivision kind of person. I love older houses and yards and more trees. If it were up to me, we would have chickens and cows, but we live in a townhouse. This is a me-personally thing. My kids and husband don't seem to notice it as much. I'm more of a nature nut than they are.

I sometimes think if we won a lot of money, I would move, but then I think again--the kids are so settled here, I wouldn't want to uproot them, and after all, it's a nice place to live. So if I get lots of money, I will most likely just buy a bigger house or hire a cleaner for this one and go away on more vacations where there are lots of petting zoos. : )

If you read my blog, you will notice I grouse and gripe a lot about the county, but that's because I tend to focus on political and social issues. This is part of my nature, so you don't want to base your decision on this (God forbid!) because as I'm sure you recognize, belief systems are highly personal.

I wonder if you have a friend or family member around here. It would be great if you could come out and "taste test" the area first. Bring your family and just experience daily life here for a week or so.

Hope this helps! Good luck, and visit again!

2009

Well, here it is. New Year's Day. A time when we review the year before, eat ham and retch at the sight of stale cookies.

I refuse to recap. If I want a recap, I can look at my scrapbooks and read my blog. I can read newspapers and other blogs. I refuse to watch mainstream media. I just can't deal. Especially this morning.

Don't get me wrong. No one from our little house party has a hangover. We did sparkling cider. It's just the whole deal and staying up past my bedtime. See how absolutely boring we are? We all played computer games, ate too much and watched the ADDAMS FAMILY.

My New Year's Promises: get my lap band and continue to de-clutter. That's it. Doable and healthy.

Happy New Year to y'all. Drink that coffee and contemplate. Meditate. Or just go back to bed. Extra sleep never hurt anyone.
